Nephrology, initially known as 'kidney medicine', is a special medicine and pediatric that is concerned with the kidneys. It is a study of kidney function and kidney problems, kidney health preservation, and kidney problem treatments, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy (dialysis and kidney transplantation). Systemic conditions affecting the kidneys (such as diabetes and autoimmune diseases) and systemic problems that occur due to kidney problems (such as kidney osteodystrophy and hypertension) are also studied in nephrology. A doctor who has undergone additional training to become a member in nephrology can call themselves a neurologist or kidney specialist. Nephrology includes diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease, including electrolyte disorders and high blood pressure. Besides, there is a special care requiring renal replacement therapy, including dialysis patients and kidney transplant patients. Many diseases that attack kidneys are systemic disorders that are not restricted to the organ itself, and may require special treatment. Examples include conditions acquired such as systemic vasculitid and autoimmune diseases as well as congenital or genetic conditions such as polycystic kidney disease. Patients referred to nephrologists after urinalysis, for various reasons, such as acute renal failure, chronic kidney disease, hematuria, proteinuria, kidney stones, hypertension, and acid/ base or electrolyte disorders.
